founded by: Chris Julian (Undftd/Stüssy/Pastelle) and Samantha Alonso
While Las Vegas is not a town known for originality—this casino looks like New York! This casino looks like Paris!—the desert city happens to be home to Fruition, the only vintage streetwear boutique in the United States.
Fruition emerged as the answer to what founders Samantha Alonso, 23, and Chris Julian, 25, saw as a visionless landscape in both the city’s creative community and the global streetwear market. “We hope Fruition [will encourage young people to] develop the cultural and creative foundation of Las Vegas,” says Alonso.
A peek at their selection narrates a history between fashion past and present: vintage brands including Bennetton and Hilfiger Racing share space with today’s ’80s-inspired streetwear. The boutique is decorated with pictures of Big Daddy Kane in his Gucci link chain. But “this isn’t about reliving the ’80s and ’90s,” Julian explains, “but rather an opportunity to inspire and educate the community on the building blocks of street fashion.”
With roots in Vegas’ Filipino immigrant community, both Julian and Alonso were heavily influenced by their parents’ love of fashion and the glamour of old Las Vegas. Today the pair, like many original-minded creatives living outside the cultural centers of New York or Los Angeles, seeks their own aesthetic rather than kowtowing to the coasts; while the original L.A. sneaker boutique Undefeated is currently opening a Vegas branch in conjunction with Fruition, Julian stresses that the new location will reflect a distinctly Vegas lifestyle and swagger.
In less than two years, Fruition has put their hometown on the map as a destination for stylists, creatives, and celebrities like M.I.A., Raekwon from Wu-Tang, and Taz from Sa-Ra. Kanye West is working with the store to develop the direction of his new clothing line, Pastel.
“By inspiring others, we can create an infrastructure of positive establishments that will change the perception and ideals that are associated with Las Vegas and, more specifically, its shopping experience,” says Alonso. In a small boutique off the Strip, she and Julian toil to ensure that, in defiance of the tagline, what happens in Vegas doesn’t just stay in Vegas.
WHY WE COSIGN: If you're in Las Vegas and you wanna go shopping you have more than a couple options at your disposal. You can hit up one of the malls, like the Fashion Show mall located on Las Vegas Blvd., right across the street from the Wynn Hotel. Or you can hit up one of the many high-fashion boutiques found in the glitziest hotels, also on the Vegas Strip. Or you can venture away from all the fake monuments and pumped oxygen and hit up one of the sickest clothing boutiques in the country, Fruition Las Vegas.
Founded by Chris Julian and Samantha Alonso, Fruition boasts a collection of clothing so diverse in brands, time periods, and styles that you'd hard-pressed to find another store that even comes close to its range. Fruition mixes archival Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Nike originals with the flyest of today's fly shit, including Jeremy Scott, Dr. Romanelli, Henrik Vibskov, Cassette Playa and Ambush. You know all those vintage pieces you see M.I.A. rocking? And all those limited-edition, one- or two-of-a-kind streetwear pieces you see artists like Lupe performing in? Fruition has it all. But the clothes are only a minor part of what Fruition is pushing forth—they're also putting out an entire aesthetic and a new way to think about style. "[It's about] leaving with not only a one-of-a-kind pop accoutrement but also a visual imprint of intellectual future and thought pattern," explains Chris Julian. "It is the shoppers—from Eddie Cruz and James Bond, to Katy Perry and Jeremy Scott, to M.I.A., tAz Arnold and Kanye West—that create the intricate reflection of the spaces' diverse limitlessness in street fashion high and low and an immediate siren that the underpinning theme of change is alive and growing." This dude is deep!
BRANDS CARRIED: Archival Chanel, MCM, Vintage Ralph Lauren, Nike Heritage, Jeremy Scott, Dr. Romanelli, Cassette Playa, Japan Grade Stüssy Surf, Northface, Henrik Vibskov, Ambush, Abstract Originals and more.
